Winter Plant Survival Tips

Winter weather in New York City is not joke.
If you’re a transplant, this is the time of year when you question your judgement. Natives like me are accustomed to the dip in temps but what about our plant friends?
Here are 3 ways to keep your plants thriving during winter.

Reconsider Your Plant Placement

We have a tendency to put our plant babies where they look most aesthetically pleasing. What if…hear me out…
What if we placed plants where they need to be instead of where you want them to be. Crazy idea right?!
Plants, like people, thrive under the most optimal conditions and it’s important we recognize what those conditions are. Low light plants should be in low light areas. Plants in need of direct light should be closer to windows. It’s also super important to remedy drafts by winterizing your space as much as possible…no plant enjoys cold gusts..

Got company coming? Leave those plants where they are! No one who loves you will care :)

Wanna boost your light source? Invest in a floor plant light. They’re adjustable and won’t add much to your electric bill!

Drip Drip

Invest in a plant mister. Trust me on this one. Winter air in our homes can be dry. Forced heat from radiators or central air units can make it even more dry than any other season. Skip the succulents though…they prefer the dryness and don’t care for mist.

Also, it doesn’t have to be wildly expensive. I use a steady stream hair mister I picked up from Target two seasons ago.

Manage Your Expectations

Remember, most plants go into dormancy this time of year. During winter, we may see little to no growth and think we’re doing something wrong. Folks have a tendency to over water or over feed to compensate for the lack of growth.
Research your plant friend to know what it needs but more importantly, so you’re aware of it’s growth phases.
