22 Ways to Declutter Your Home for 2022

The New Year is here and it’s great time to de-clutter your space. It may seem overwhelming to tackle everything at once so let’s break it down into manageable pieces…room by room.

Let’s start in the kitchen!

1) Toss all old seasonings. The celery salt that expired 2 years ago? Let. It. Go.
2) Cereal lover? These airtight containers keep our cereal fresher longer. It also makes cabinet storage a breeze! We are a visual bunch and it helps to track which of our faves are moving faster than others.
3) Make knife storage easier with a wall mounted knife holder. Not only will it keep them handy, it’ll give you more well needed room in those drawers.
4) Want a clutter free counter top? Think about storing appliances you don’t use regularly in the pantry or a cabinet. Having it out of the way will give you the counter space you need.
5) Take stock of the dishes and pans you use regularly. Found a few you haven’t used in forever? Consider donating them to charity.
6) Detox all of those plastic containers you don’t use by having a pair party. Turn on your favorite tunes and start putting lids on every container. One lid for each container. Not enough lids?? Toss the extra containers.
Too many lids? Toss those extra bottoms. And get rid of the ones that are stained or have seen better days. You’ll get more - trust me.

Time to hit those closets!

7) Give
8) Half
9) Your
10) Closet
11) Away

This is clutch! I challenge you to give half your closet away. Here’s how:
Make 3 sections…those pieces you absolutely love and will wear in the next 6 months, those you simply like and those you are ready to give away now. Keep what you love. Donate what you’re ready to give away and those pieces you like….well-give them to friends and family. This will make it easier to part ways with.

Now that your closet is half the size it once was, it’s time to repeat the activity above. Yes, do it again to ensure you really got everything. I promise you’ll feel better by keeping only what you love and actually wear.

Is your bathroom up to par?

12) Expired cleaning products? Toss them.
13) Expired hair products and medicine? Toss those too!
14) Want to keep your countertop clean? Just Dot it! For the next 30 days, create a habit of clearing the countertop once per day. After 30 days, you’ve just formed a habit.
15) Throw out old toothbrushes, pieces of soap and bath linens that have seen better days.
16) Nothing says clutter like clothes on the floor. Invest in a slender decorative covered basket for your laundry.

Here are tips you can use for the entire space

17) Unused furniture in your basement or garage? Have a sofa that you like but you just don’t love?
Consider selling items on Facebook Marketplace, Offer Up or even Craigslist. You will get many “Is it still available” questions but it’s a great way to unload pieces who still has good years ahead but may no longer be a good fit for your space.
18) Stop buying items you like.
Seriously, just stop.
Going on a spending fast will not only save you money but give you a chance to assess what items you actually need vs those that you like temporarily.
19) Follow the one in/one out rule. For each item to are considering bringing in your home, you have to donate, sell or give away another item of equal value and/or size.
20) Tchotchke lover? It’s time to leave give them away . Pick 7 that you love and display them on a picture ledge. The rest? You know what I’m going to say already.
21) Want to tackle your basement? Every time you take out the trash, throw one thing away. I’m talking old paint cans, broken or unused items that are accumulating dust. You can do this! One thing will turn into one bag that will turn into a more ideal space. Use my friends Christine’s need, use, love framework to guide you through.
22) Commit to making your space clutter free. This really should be number 1 because the mindset change will be what drives you to actually action."

This is not an overnight process but it’s helpful to put a time frame around it. Set the goal then crush it!
